Why a physical model in infrastructure planning

An interchange is a thoroughly three-dimensional object: levels that cross, ramps that curve, and vertical clearances that are hard to grasp from a two-dimensional drawing. A physical model lets planning committees, developers and the public see the project from every angle in seconds, without having to read a technical drawing.

The technology and the material

The model was printed in MJF in PA12. The choice follows from two things: the accuracy is high enough to hold thin ramps and barriers at a small scale, and the material is strong enough that the model survives being carried to presentations and committees without breaking.

Converting the planning files into a model ready to print
Splitting it to fit the build chamber, with the joins on hidden lines
Printing, powder removal and finishing
